LONG MARCH SPACE application for “Fukutake House” Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial

  Artist:

  QIU Zhijie

  Title:

The Thunderstorm is Slowly Approaching 2007-09

  Type of work:

Performance, sculptural installation and two-channel video

  About the work:

The Thunderstorm is Slowly Approaching, by the artist Qiu Zhije, takes the traditional Chinese dragon dance as a starting point for investigating the pressures to hide national identity within a ‘host’ culture.

  Work description:

This work involves a ten-member dragon dance team who perform outdoors (during the opening event) wearing a costume made from camouflage material. The resulting installation displays the costumes from this performance, including video documentation of the performed act. Displayed as a two-channel installation, the first video shows how the performers are trained while the second records the final performance. The interior of the venue of this work (teaching material room) would be painted in the pattern of the camouflage costume.

  Details of venue for installation:

  Teaching material room

  16.5 square meters

  3mx5.5m

  Ceiling high: 3m

  Components of installation:

X10 (x6 performers; x4 musicians) required to be trained as dragon dance team members (Echigo Tsumari to source)

x10 sets of camouflage costume worn by dragon dance team (artist provides)

  x1 dragon costume (artist provides)

x2 LCD screens (Echigo Tsumari to source)

x2 DVD players (Echigo Tsumari to source)

Paint and necessary tools to paint interior walls of room in camouflage costume pattern (Echigo Tsumari to source)

  Issues for consideration:

Qiu Zhijie would like to work with the local community in the painting of this room, which he hopes would be a permanent display – is this possible?

Qiu Zhijie would like to work with 10 volunteers for the dragon-dance team – are there people within the local community who would be appropriate and willing?
